The first new Star Wars game since Disney took over is a version of free-to-play hit Tiny Tower, but how strong is it with the Force?
Disney has a lot of cheek using the game of war hack tool this game, seeing as the very first thing they did when buying George Lucas' empire is close down one of gaming's most storied developers. The name alone lives on now, and Tiny Death Star represents a clear vision of Disney's take on the games industry: mobile only, free-to-play, cheap-to-make, and utterly devoid of substance.
The frustrating thing about Disney's attitude is that their brief dabble with the modern console market did result in some quality games, especially 2010's Split/Second: Velocity - which remains one of our favourite arcade racers of all time. But it wasn't a hint and neither were things like the Turok reboot or Tron movie tie-ins, and the Mouse House quickly lost interest in traditional gaming.
By the time it came to buying out George Lucas the head of Disney admitted, €We're likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console' and then a few months later LucasArts was shut down and the Star Wars console licence sold to EA. The fact that LucasArts' work on Star Wars 1313 was at the time producing some of the most impressive next gen visuals in the whole industry didn't seem to matter at all.
All of which brings us to Tiny Death Star, a re-skinned version of developer NimbleBit's Tiny Tower and the least interesting thing we've done with our iPhone since accidentally dropping it down the toilet the other week.
Tiny Tower clearly has its fans, but then so too does Cookie Clicker and we don't think anyone's going to defend that as a masterpiece in game design. Tiny Death Star isn't quite that inane but it is a quintessential free-to-play mobile game, where not very much happens for long periods of time - in a purposeful attempt to bore you into paying it to hurry up. |
